I crush on you.

How fun - Andrea from superhero journal is having a crush contest: "Childhood crushes, celebrity crushes, stories of the crazy things we do for the crush. We want your crush stories!"

She shares her story where she approached her crush (who worked in a bagel store), with a bagel that had her name and phone number written on it. It's so cute!! (and yes, her crush did call her the next day)

It reminds me of a previous crush (I was the crushee): a Japanese guy in my first-year physics class back in B.C. had waited all semester before telling me how much he liked me. To be honest, I had never noticed him in class (I sat up front - the big geek, I was). After our last class, he approached me, placed an origami swan in my hands and dashed off. I was too surprised to react! It was beautifully made, and when I opened it, it was a note of him declaring his crush on me. He said that he had liked me throughout the semester, that he thought I had a beautiful smile, and he gave his name and phone number. Seriously, up to this day, it remains the SWEETEST thing a guy has ever done for me. (edited: tee hee - I forgot about Daniel's taking care of me while I was very drunk (he was assisted by another good friend, Little Dee). How quickly we forget. he he heee)

So what did I do?

I never called him! I was too shy! I mean, he was cute but I was also very shy at that time. I couldn't imagine calling up a guy that I've actually never talked to. But I kept the swan for so many years - unfortunately, whilst moving back to Malaysia, it got lost amongst the craziness of moving your life from one continent to another.

I feel bad for never calling him up, and making him think that I wasn't interested in getting to know him better. Oh sigh.. the crazy things we do (or don't).

In another crazy crush story, I had the biggest crush on this guy named Eric - he was half Filipino/half white. So cute (short, but still really cute). He was in my English class and we had worked together for a couple of projects. I don't know what got into me one day, but I had decided to look him up in the phone book and CALL HIM UP. The first thing he said to me was "what's up?" And I completely blanked out because I didn't know how to respond to that. Needless to say, it was a very uncomfortable phone call because I didn't really have a plan of what to say to him AFTER I called him up. Yeah, so smart.

I remained really embarrassed about that for a couple of years. I saw him once on Broadway street and I ran and hid. He hee hee.

You'd think I'd stop calling up boys after that but I didn't. Had another crush on this guy but the good thing about this was that we were friends first. And it helped that I could tell that he had a crush on me back. But NOTHING was happening. So well, I bit the bullet, called him and asked him out (he he heee). The first date lasted over 12 hours (we talked for ages) and the relationship lasted over three years so.. not bad lah.

A guy just told me recently that he felt that being friends first with girls is like the kiss of death, because they would not see him as a romantic potential after that. While it might be like that for some girls, I think overall, being friends first works best. It definitely works for me - I rather get to know a guy first as a friend before anything else. I know, I know - I'm a crush-o-rama but those are just it - crushes, nothing substantial. I think worthwhile relationships start out by being friends first (of course, there are always exceptions). What do you think?

I was about to talk about the crush/crushes..hehehe...great minds think alike eh?

But I must agree with you,am the kind that tends to go into a strong friendship foundation before deciding to go ito anything more than that.I find it much more solid since when you start out as friends, you tend to be more relaxed and your own self.

Dee, I've always thought that it's wise to make friends with lots of cute guys.. ;-P

joking aside, I do feel friendships are very important, even if your crushes don't work out - you still gain a friend!

I've actually felt both here: first was a guy I quite liked but he had a girlfriend so we just became great friends. A few months later, he broke up with the girl and asked me out on a date but by then it was like dating my brother, I just couldn't get my head around it. Pity too as he was very nice.

Secondly there was a guy who liked me but I was getting over someone else so it was a while before we finally had our first date, we became best friends in the interim, and well, we're having our 8yr wedding anniversary on tuesday.

Conclusion: it depends on the couple.
