News roundup

Gosh - another earthquake off Sumatra. I only learnt about it a couple of days after it happened, when I came out of the jungle and Steven, a friendly Iban with an easy laugh and a love for jokes, informed me. We were still very much isolated from the rest of the world at the station (at least over four hours away by longboat from the nearest civilization) - he had heard about it on the radio.

When I managed to get hold of a newspaper days later, I was further surprised to find out that the island that was most affected was Pulau Nias, which has been on my travel radar since last year. I can't help but feel for the people in the affected islands. After all, it's only a couple of months after the last earthquake and its resulting tsunami.

Pope John Paul II recently suffered heart failure, was given last rites and is now reportedly to be in a coma. I guess I'm more Catholic than I thought, I can't help but be very saddened and I'm praying for him.

A Filipino columnist, vocal about corruption in the Philippines, was shot to death in front of her ten-year-old daughter. She's the second Filipino journalist murdered this year, and last year, 13 journalists were killed in the country.

War crimes committed in Darfur are now going to be tried at the International Criminal court, thanks to the UN Security Council. Sudan's very pissed.

Terry Schiavo died after two weeks of the removal of her feeding tube, and her family's still feuding.

Britney's pregnant? Huh?

Wow, what a depressing news roundup. Maybe I should have stayed in the jungle.
