Fancy a free film screening??

I know, it's been a while.

I've been really busy with Life lately, including organizing the free film festival here in Kuching (and on a volunteer basis too!).

It's to be held this weekend, on the 17th and 18th of December, 2005 at the Old Courthouse Theatre, starting from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The films are on the natural world, wildlife and people. Think National Geographic and Animal Planet HOWEVER you are unlikely to see these films on your local satellite channel because a good chunk of these films are independently made.

Some of the producers and film directors really struggled to get their film made, pouring their heart and their own money into it.

For one particular film, the producer couldn't get any of the local tv channels to air it because it was too controversial. You gotta see this one because it's 100% Malaysian.

There are the crowd-pleaser films like the one with Julia Roberts and the orang utans. But as well, you get to watch 'experimental' films that deliver their message without any soundtrack, or voice-overs. All you see are stark images. And you are forced to come to your own conclusions. Some people say that it is difficult to watch because it's not your typical film. I say take a chance to expand your mind -- movies like Narnia and Harry Potter are just cheap, meaningless entertainment. All the films that will be shown in this festival have a message to deliver. Some will break your heart, others would make you laugh, and all would make you think on how YOUR decisions affect not just the people around you, but the environment and its wildlife.

If you live in Kuching or know people in Kuching, please help spread the word. Very rarely do we get to a chance like this to watch these films for FREE in a wonderful theatre.

I hope to see you there!

p/s thanks to SP for kicking my ass on updating this blog!!

Hey,
You are back! Enjoy these kinds of art/ experimental film while you can. I used to watch cool films like these while I was single and living/working in NYC. Now with kids, wife and job even commercial movies like Harry Potter or King Kong are too intellectual. Cheers

Its a bit far for me to see the festival in Kuching. Is it okay if I still go see Narnia?
